^ The Ardennes front proves to be thinly held.  Deployed along
the 85-mile sector is a lightly armed cavalry group, an armored 
division and four infantry divisions, two of them green and the other
two exausted from battle in the Hrtgen Forest.  The 106th division
is fresh on the line and arrived in the area on the 11th of December.

^In the first few days of fighting, American soldiers defending the
Ardennes give with little fight.  Most soldiers along the front are
completely inexperienced and arrived in Europe only recently.  The
experienced among them are units that were mauled by the bloody fighting

Victory at this point than droves of surrendering Americans.

rather than waste the time to send prisoners to the rear, they
are executed more often than not.  As the town of Waimes falls,

^ The capture of Baugnez yeilds 120 prisoners from the American 285th
Field Artillery Observation Battalion.  The men had rolled into Baugnez
just as Peiper's advance guard reached the crossroads.  Peiper's column
opened fire on Battery B and panicky GIs leaped from their trucks.  The
men in the ditch, hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned, quickly surrendered.

^ The prisoners were lined up and prodded into a pasture near the crossroads.
While standing there, some tanks and half-tracks moved up and parked in the
opposite field.  Then the Germans opened fire on the prisoners with machine
guns, machine pistols, and other weapons.  If there were any survivors found,
they were shot in the head.

the northern thrust of the advance, makes a fighting retreat north, south, and 
west--away from the front.  Making their fight in the Elsenborn area, they 
continually shrug off wave after wave, fighting with unexpected determination.
A seargeant whose squad had been wiped out grabbed a Browning automatic rifle from
a dying buddy and charged into advancing Germans, firing as he went, only to be
cut down after he ran out of ammunition.
